Abstract
The level of technology at which tribal societies existed, up to this point in their histories, forced them to separate into smaller bands during most of the year. Tribes wandered over fairly wide areas of subsistence territory. This process was later altered, however, when subsistence territories became more stable because of the development of fishing, planting, and animal herding.
